Grain-Free Dark Chocolate Chunk and Blackberry Blondies

I’m not a baker. It’s not my thing. I don’t like to measure or follow instructions. When I’m not developing recipes, you won’t find me with a measuring cup in hand or a baking scale under foot (is that not how baking scales work? Weird). It’s cumbersome to have to be so meticulous. I come from a long line of people who write recipes with the precise measurements of “just put some soy sauce” or “use a few glugs of oil”. I was raised inside of a wild and free kitchen culture. So, as you can imagine,  I don’t like to feel the weight of science on my shoulders as we anticipate, with bated breath, to see if gluten-free brownies are going to rise. Baking is one thing, and gluten-free baking is a whole different more complicated (and sometimes frustrating) animal. You know what I’m talking about, right? Maybe you recently went gluten-free and you decided to google a recipe for bread. You are met with approximately five hundred different types of special order flours–there are many things on this list you didn’t know could even be made into a flour: Chestnuts. Sorghum. Teff. Eye of Newt. Xanthan Gum. Crickets. Unicorn Shoulder. In short, it ain’t always easy. I see you. I hear you. We are one.  […]

Turmeric Roasted Sweet Potatoes + Parsley Tahini Sauce

I know that talking about the weather is usually considered small talk. I’m well-versed in this practice. I’m the girl who will fill an awkward space in a conversation between a grocery store clerk and myself with phrases such as, “Wow! Some weather we’re having-eh?” or, “This sunshine is just bonkers, it’s just so hot,” or, “My golly! It’s raining like cats and dogs out there”. To answer your question, yes, I am probably indeed making the conversation awkward and yes, I do have the spirit of someone’s jokey grandfather. If it makes you feel better, I only wink at them sometimes.

Berry, Lime & Spearmint Tea Smoothie

I’d love to be able to share in everyone’s fall enthusiasm. Boasting pumpkin everything, with the promise of scarves and boots and 90% less pit stains on tank tops. I’m with you guys. I would like it to rain. I would like the dusty California hills to be able to settle down with a nice cool drink of water — or vodka — whichever falls out of the sky first. But, right now it kind of feels like fall will never get here. It’s what I affectionately call “I’M-PROBABLY-GONNA-DIE-HOT” outside. Also, by affectionately, I mean dramatically — and most often peppered with choice swear words. So, here we are, clinging to the hope of fall, and forced into late summer survival mode. Also, our meals are going to be exclusively smoothies. K, thanks.

Loaded Tuna Salad Mason Jars To-Go + The 21 Day Sugar Detox Recap {Weeks 2 + 3}

I always find it slightly troubling that life around you does not slow down when you do. For instance, it’s been several weeks since I actually completed my 21DSD (21 Day Sugar Detox), but I haven’t been able to write about it until now. Time did not freeze. The internet did not stop creating meme after meme. Life goes on, even when you’re laying on the couch with fevers and body aches. Somewhere in the third week of my 21DSD, I got really sick, and it set off a series of chain reactions. I got stressed out. My Lyme disease flared up in a major way. I’ve basically been spending my days trying to heal. This isn’t glamorous or particularly exciting. It looks a lot like day-sleeping on the couch and watching all the Netflix. Sounds nice, right? Just not four weeks in a row.

Roasted Cabbage With Almond Sesame Sauce & Herbs + The 21 Day Sugar Detox Recap {Week One}

So, I’m kind of in the middle of a breakup.

About ten days ago, I decided to breakup with sugar. After making (and eating) some of the world’s most delicious grain-free brownies (yes, don’t get weird on me–I’ll still share that recipe with you), I started noticing some things were going on in my body. My joints hurt almost immediately. My anxiety spiked. I felt bad, and generally hungover the next day. But, that didn’t stop my cravings. I wanted another brownie. I wanted a chocolate bar. I wanted a pint of ice cream. This felt like new territory for me. I’ve never been much of a sweets monster. I usually opt for the savory things in life. Steak is my power food. I choose crispy chicken skin over cake. That’s just how I roll. But, recently I began this spiral of chasing my savory meals with a sweet treat. It was a like a switch flipped in my brain upon meal completion, begging for a little bit of sweet sugary crack.  After compulsively eating more brownies than one should, I not only felt achy and anxious, but I started to feel out of control. At this point, I ordered The 21 Day Sugar Detox, by Diane Sanfilippo. It was time to call in reinforcements. […]

You Got Me Straight Crushin’, Boo! {Volume Three}

Dudes.

It’s been a week. The long kind. Not all bad, but totally long. I’m sitting here finishing this post that was meant for a Saturday on a Sunday night. Looking at that dreamy beach-y photo from my recent getaway in Carmel and feeling a slight case of the Monday dreads. How, oh, how is it already Sunday night?

I YOLO-ed this weekend (are we still saying YOLO? I didn’t get the memo). There was sunshine and hiking and lots of time with our big golden pup. I ate pumpkin pie for dinner on Friday. I snuggled the husband. Watched a coming of age movie about some bird nerds. I planted some spinach. I ate more pumpkin pie. I purchased a new handbag for the first time in three years. I vowed to said handbag that I will never let it fall victim to a forgotten black and smashed banana (like so many purses before it). Oh, and I intend to eat more pumpkin pie right after I press publish. Okay… so, maybe my weekend was less YOLO and more YOPT (You Only Pie Thrice).

In other news, I’ve compiled this sweet list of things and peeps and funnies that’s got me straight crushin’. Enjoy! […]

Gluten-Free Funfetti Cake With Buttercream Frosting

It was my husband’s birthday, so I took four sticks of butter and a mess  of sugar and made this big ol’ cake.

I know, I know. This isn’t our usual speed. I am known for my healthy grain-free scones and big guiltless pans of meatballs. We drink green juice. We also drink bourbon. But, this. Well, it’s out of my comfort zone. It’s a layer cake. Remember that time I cried over a layer cake? Yeah, that got real. But sometimes, just sometimes we step out of our comfort zones for love. […]

Stone Fruit, Sweet Tea + Blackberry Sangria

I started this week off by washing my face with shampoo. Well, technically it was both shampoo & conditioner since I have a sweet all-in-one-lazy-girl-combo. No, this was not intentional. It was confusing to have such a thick lather on my eyebrows and cheeks. Even though this is my usual gentle facial cleansing routine, it took too long for me to figure out that something was amiss.  Finally, the light bulb went on after experiencing the mind-blowing-sizzling-shampoo-induced- inferno burning up my eyeballs. I think this set the tone for my week. Yep, it’s been great. I don’t feel crazy.
