Spiced Ginger Kabocha Pie with Maple Coconut Cream {Gluten-Free, Grain-Free, Paleo}

In an effort to make fall arrive here in California, I’ve been consuming pie as if it were some sort of fork to face rain-dance.

Really, it’s just something I’m trying out for the greater good. I will eat pie for breakfast in the name of chunky sweaters, and tall boots, and the California drought. I’ll happily open my pie hole for dessert, in the hopes of bringing a changing of the leaves, crisp fall air, hot toddies, and the right to stop sweating. Please, someone… anyone… turn off my armpit glands. I know this isn’t “healthy” to do, but since it’s divine intervention I’m asking for, I figure you can find a way to divinely redesign this girl’s pits so they’re no longer weeping under the weight of pie baking in summer temperatures. Speaking of my armpits– did you all catch episode seven of The So…Let’s Hang Out Podcast? It’s a doozy. […]

Roasted Mushroom & Cauliflower Rice Salad With Spinach, Oranges & Olives {Gluten-Free, Paleo & Vegan}

Happy New Year, Friends!!

I hope you had a great holiday season. I spent my time road-tripping up to Washington state in order to spend Christmas with the in-laws. This is the first major trip we’ve embarked on since I started my Lyme treatment. Big deal stuff.  We packed up our little car and made room for our golden retriever in the back seat. We listened to a lot of  this podcast. We took Emma to the beach on Christmas day. We drank some of my Apple & Cinnamon Bourbon at night. We watched an entire slide show of really adorable fat naked baby photos featuring my husband as said really adorable fat naked baby. We stopped in Portland for a night on our way home  and stayed in a totally quirky dog friendly hotel. I woke up to gluten-free apple fritters and then spent too much money at Powell Books. You can check out more of our trip on Instagram. […]

Sour Green Apple, Ginger & Vodka Spritzer

Thanksgiving is a little more than a week away.

By now you’re probably trying to finalize which method you’re going to use to cook your turkey. Perhaps spatchcock-ing? Perhaps deep frying? Maybe an adventure in Turducken-ing? The world is your oyster turkey tail.

There are lots of decisions to be made. Like, are you going to put bacon in your brussel sprouts? You probably should. Or, is it a good move to make your own pie crust? If you have the time, I totally vote yes. Or, should you sit your cranky Aunt Millie next to your cousin’s new boyfriend who curses like a sailor? Probably. Do you mess with the way your Italian grandmother insists on arranging the peppers on her requisite antipasto plate? NEVER. Don’t touch that. She’ll smack your fingers with a spoon. I know this from experience. Do you still allow the relative who can’t remember to refrigerate anything to bring a mayonnaise-based dip? Yikes. Who doesn’t love a gamble? So many decisions. […]

Grain-Free Cardamom Spiced Plum Galette + The Zenbelly Cookbook Giveaway!

It’s Wednesday. It’s totally time to  TREAT YO’ SELF.

We’ve been keeping things pretty savory lately with Soy & Ginger Crock Pot Ribs and Tomato & Coconut Chicken Curry. There’s been oodles of zoodles. Some with peanut sauce. Some with pesto and roasted tomatoes. And while we can probably all agree that savory flavors are their own treat,  I think we deserve something sweet. That rhymed. I feel like a culinary Dr. Seuss. Plum Galettes here and there, Plum Galettes everywhere. Do you like my hat? I do not like your hat. Goodbye. Okay… did I lose you? I read a lot of Dr. Seuss as a kid.

But, back to treats. I’m here to help. I’m bringing you a recipe for some hot n’ sassy plums nestled all comfy-like in a butter-laced almond meal crust. Oh, and I’m totally giving away a copy of the book that inspired this fine creation. See? Treat. Yo. Self.  […]

Tomato & Coconut Crock-Pot Chicken Curry With Delicata Squash & Kale {Gluten-Free & Paleo}

You guys. I just got back from vacation!

This body got out of the Bay Area and headed to a resort out in Carmel Valley. I spent three glorious days with my husband in celebration of our third wedding anniversary. It  was amazing.

There was a couples massage, breakfast in bed, sun-soaked naps after swims in the saltwater pool, more naps, lots of laughing, cocktails, wine, steak, and creme brule. We didn’t bring a computer. We put our feet in the sand, and our toes in the ocean. We honored our annual tradition of each writing a new set of vows, and reading them to each other someplace beautiful. This year it was on a hilltop that looked out at mountains. Despite it being acrazy and unexpected year, it’s in these moments together that I feel like the luckiest. Spilling the contents of our open hearts and holding hands (maybe with a side of light sobs–because, feelings). Gosh, I love this man of mine. This is getting mushy and wordy. I could write a whole post about this vacation. Maybe I will. You can see a few snaps of our trip on Instagram. […]

Gluten-Free Funfetti Cake With Buttercream Frosting

It was my husband’s birthday, so I took four sticks of butter and a mess  of sugar and made this big ol’ cake.

I know, I know. This isn’t our usual speed. I am known for my healthy grain-free scones and big guiltless pans of meatballs. We drink green juice. We also drink bourbon. But, this. Well, it’s out of my comfort zone. It’s a layer cake. Remember that time I cried over a layer cake? Yeah, that got real. But sometimes, just sometimes we step out of our comfort zones for love. […]

Honey Roasted Apricot Manhattans

If you know me, you know that I love bourbon.

Somewhere along the line it happened. I’m not sure when, but it did. I gave up my teenage affection for hard lemonade, and my Sex And The City-induced Cosmopolitan phase in favor of spicier, boozier, hair-on-my-lady-chest-ier pursuits.

My husband found his love of Bourbon through my father. It became a family affair. If we’re having a cozy evening with my family, there is a more than likely chance that we’re going to be swilling Manhattans with (or as) appetizers. If you’re wondering, this practice goes really well with a game of Cards Against Humanity. It’s only slightly awkward when your Mother (the decidedly least gross, modestly-mannered person in the bunch) pulls out a big win for putting together combinations of cards that would make a sailor blush. Okay, perhaps it’s best that you play at your own risk. You’ve been warned. Mothers can surprise you. […]

Spicy Banana Scones With Caramel Glaze {Grain-Free + Gluten-Free}

Yesterday I baked my feelings.

I turned on some Ben Folds Five, preheated my oven, and mashed bananas together with eggs.  It seemed like the only way to make the day manageable. There was also a Fiona Apple and Shepherd’s Pie situation that occurred later that evening. I’m telling you, I really cooked my feelings into submission. Also, Fiona Apple brings the appropriate amount of angst to Shepherd’s Pie. It makes it edgy (dare I say, Criminal? Get it? #chickrockpuns #lilithfairkitchen) I highly recommend it.

I don’t know about you, but when things get hard, or my to-do list starts to span pages, I tend to drop everything and head into the kitchen. This is how I work things out. There’s meditation in there. You’re forced to clear your mind, focus on what’s in front of you, and if all goes right, deliver a satisfying result (that you can then eat–which is a much better outcome than doing laundry — you can’t eat your laundry).  […]

Stone Fruit, Sweet Tea + Blackberry Sangria

I started this week off by washing my face with shampoo. Well, technically it was both shampoo & conditioner since I have a sweet all-in-one-lazy-girl-combo. No, this was not intentional. It was confusing to have such a thick lather on my eyebrows and cheeks. Even though this is my usual gentle facial cleansing routine, it took too long for me to figure out that something was amiss.  Finally, the light bulb went on after experiencing the mind-blowing-sizzling-shampoo-induced- inferno burning up my eyeballs. I think this set the tone for my week. Yep, it’s been great. I don’t feel crazy.
