Bacon & Apple Beef Liver Pâté

“What am I? Chopped liver?”

This was a phrase commonly used in my childhood. I hugged one grandparent and the other would expectantly wait for their hug and exclaim something about being a piece of chopped liver. It was a phrase that popped up a lot. I’m sure you’ve heard it or used it, or had a Nana say it to you while squeezing your cheeks. The phrase was used to express a feeling of being left out. The visual of sad, grey, organ-meat-mush being neglected on the side of one’s plate is haunting. Until this past year, this was the only experience I had with liver. It was only a concept for loneliness and isolation. An expression. A visual symbol of exclusion.  So, in my brain it wasn’t meant for human consumption. I equated it on the same plane as drinking a tall glass of human tears. It’s just not done. Also, sad. Also, gross. […]

The So…Let’s Hang Out Podcast // Episode 001 — First Times

You guys! I am both buzzing with excitement, and anxious enough to pee my pants a lil’. Because, WHOOPS… I totally started a podcast with one of my best buds, Beth of Tasty Yummies. Welcome to The So…Let’s Hang Out Podcast, folks!  If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like if we decided to hang out in real life, this is kinda it. I’d consider this in the category of “Easy Listening”– but, there’s 99% less Kenny G (you’ll have to listen to this episode to get that 1%). In general, we will be talking about real life, food, love, garbage television, more real life, trends, more real life, gluten free living, and a myriad of other topics that get slightly awkward. Think of it as listening in on a conversation between best friends who just happen to be gluten-free. Just… ya know… hanging out. Now, with that haphazard intro, I give you the show notes for Episode One. I hope you enjoy!

Warm Brussels Sprout Salad With Roots, Radishes & Toasted Coconut

This bowl of veggies speaks to my seasonal confusion. Warm brussies at the bottom, watermelon radishes chilling on the top with roots, macadamia nuts and toasted coconut. It’s some sort of a fall meets spring culinary mullet. Business on the bottom, party on the top. But, I’m not complaining. If I have to stare at a mullet of any kind, I choose this one. Or, one of my Dad’s headshots from the 80’s. He had a glorious and naturally curly mullet. The photo is in black and white, with a soft glow emanating off of his ringlets. It’s really something. So, I should change my statement and say that if I have to stare at a brightly colored metaphorical mullet, it would be this salad. You know, since my preferred black and white mullet slot is already taken. I like to clear these things up. They feel important.
